Our St. Louis team dedicated their Sunday to take part in the AFSP St. Louis Out of the Darkness Walk. We feel privileged to contribute to this important cause. Murphy Company remains committed to backing the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and we’re proud to say we got to participate in two of these walks this year. Murphy Colorado dedicated a Saturday morning to participating in AFSP’s Out of the Darkness Walk at Berkely Lake Park. Seeing the numerous individuals come out to support this meaningful cause was truly heartwarming.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is based in New York City, and the organization’s stated mission is to “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.” There were nearly 48,344 suicides in the US in 2020, and 1.4 million suicide attempts. AFSP attempts to combat this through 24/7 live suicide hotlines like #988 and even connects users to school or community programs designed to help those who suffer from suicidal tendencies. AFSP is a voluntary health organization that advocates for research and education about suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and AFSP understands the importance of spreading awareness. One of the ways they spread awareness is through these ‘Out of the Darkness’ Community Walks.
The construction industry suffers from the highest suicide rate among all occupations, three times the rate of the general population. AFSP provides resources to help viewers learn about suicide, how we can help prevent it, and resources for those affected and their families. We feel privileged to collaborate with AFSP and eagerly anticipate furthering our partnership and support of this transformative organization.
