Murphy Company was contracted by CRB to complete the mechanical, HVAC, and AG plumbing work for the ICL Specialty Products Carondelet Manufacturing Facility Expansion. This project involved constructing a new building to house the new food process manufacturing equipment for a plant-based protein product. Murphy’s scope included furnishing and installing AHU units, ductwork, and associated accessories, as well as managing the installation of all process tanks, process and utility piping, above-grade plumbing, and a sump pump with suction lines. Throughout the project, Murphy adapted to design changes and navigated supply chain challenges.
In close collaboration with CRB OneSolution™, Murphy played a key role in formalizing this pilot plant—a new venture for the owner. As late as August 2021, owner requirements continued to evolve during construction. In June 2021, the owner/GC canceled long lead equipment (three specialty tanks) that they had ordered six months earlier. However, CRB, ICL, and Murphy quickly devised a solution to minimize delays. They identified three existing tanks, which were transported to Murphy’s Fabrication Shop for substantial modifications. These ASME code vessels were expertly altered to meet the project’s specific requirements, preventing a startup delay of 4-6 months.
Our team overcame obstacles, including tank delays and late-stage process changes. One particularly complex task involved modifying a tank by removing its top and fabricating a custom removable lid from plate steel, adjusting the vessel jacketing to fit the new lid, and polishing the interior to meet strict surface finish standards. Despite the challenges of working in a fully operational plant with limited space, Murphy navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with minimal disruptions and accommodated process updates. Their efforts ensured that the new production facility was brought online without delay.
