Emcompass Health – The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis

Murphy Company was contracted by ECHO Engineering to replace 89 Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes throughout the four-story medical facility. The new Trane VAV boxes featured factory-mounted controls and Hays hose kits with automatic flow-setting devices. These units were installed in a variety of spaces, including patient rooms, training areas, common spaces, the kitchen/cafeteria areas, and back-of-house support zones.

Meeting the project schedule required detailed coordination with the facility manager and nursing staff. Daily planning ensured clear access to work areas and allowed flexibility to shift locations as needed. Pre-planning was also critical due to each new VAV box having different dimensions than the original units. Our Sheet Metal Foreman Jason Williams proactively evaluated each installation, created duct transition drawings, and coordinated fabrication in advance—enabling us to adapt quickly when areas unexpectedly became unavailable.

Field conditions posed several challenges, particularly on the first floor, where tight ceiling spaces and existing infrastructure limited accessibility. Our crew implemented custom scaffolding solutions and coordinated with the facility to remove furniture and equipment, ensuring both access and safety. Close collaboration with nursing staff allowed us to schedule installations around patient availability without disrupting care.

The project was completed under budget and with zero safety incidents.
