Meridian SPM Building – Summer 2020 Outage

Meridian Outage Work – Seven Phases – Existing Building and Addition
The project, completed in seven phases, involved both brief and extensive outages, along with work on the building exterior outside of the outage windows. Our primary client was the EPC contractor, Burns and McDonnell. Our team also managed small scopes directly for the plant and another design firm hired by Meridian.

General Scope:

  1. Pipe and Ductwork Installation:
    • Connected five new AHUs on the platform above the prefabrication building to the existing duct inside the clean production building.
    • Included installation of new fan filter units (HEPA), controls, split systems, air devices, induct equipment (heaters, humidifiers, fans, etc.), and extensive demolition of existing ducts and AHUs (located on the roof and in the interstitial space inside the building).
  2. Ceiling Plenum Installation:
    • Installed a new ceiling plenum with integral fans and HEPA filters for Room 104 in the production suite of the clean production facility.
  3. Compressed Air Equipment Installation:
    • Installed new compressed air equipment, including two sets of compressors, an air dryer, and a storage tank in the new CA/WFI building addition.
    • Routed new CH storage tank in Room 71 water processing and connected it to the existing CA system.
    • Demolished old CA equipment and installed a new CA loop around the existing clean production building with new point-of-use drops.
  4. WFI Water Loop Installation:
    • Installed a new WFI (Water for Injection) loop around the existing clean production building with new point-of-use drops.
    • Originally included supply and installation of new WFI equipment, but this portion was canceled when Meridian decided they needed more future capacity.
  5. Ventilation Duct Installation:
    • Provided and installed a ventilation duct for the rotating storage unit and the handle unit’s built-in new addition.
  6. Water and Drainage System Installation:
    • Provided and installed all associated water and drainage systems related to the above.
  7. New Drain and Vent Lines:
    • Provided and installed new drain and vent lines associated with building additions.

Complexity and Challenges:
The project had to be completed within a short timeframe, necessitating significant noninvasive pre-work and post-work to maintain FDA compliance outside the planned outage. The planned outage spanned three weeks, preceded by a two-week preparation period and followed by three weeks of testing, balancing, commissioning, and validation.
