University of Colorado – Anschutz Central Utility Plant (CUP)

Murphy Company was contracted by Howell Construction to install a variety of large and critical pieces of equipment that needed to be installed in an existing facility. Our scope of work included the installation of a Boiler B-7 – Cleaver Brooks Water Tube Steam Boiler,110,000 lb/hr with an Economizer about 94,000 lbs in weight. A Deaerator Tank DA-4 from BFS 150,000 lb/hr, 3,000 gal. capacity, and a Chiller CH-10 – York Centrifugal Chiller 2200 Ton Capacity 3300 GPM. Several pumps and air handling units to be able to control the temperature and air moving through the plant.

This project was challenging on many levels because the daily operations of the central utility plant could not be compromised during the installation process. Other challenges included figuring out a way to support the piping for the economizer piping in the basement and getting the large equipment with only one access point from the first floor. With the help of the RMH group, the CU Anschutz team, Howell Construction, Siemens, and the Murphy project team, we were able to complete this job on time and under budget.

We were able to utilize Hololens technology to provide a real-time visual representation of the BIM model in the field. This greatly increased owner’s ability to comment on the project and evaluate what it would like installed. We leveraged our team’s fabrication abilities to their maximum and reduced field crew size by fabricating as much as possible that could be hoisted through the limited building opening. In the end, we were able to complete numerous interconnections to existing systems without any unplanned disruptions to ongoing operations.
