Murphy Company first arrived at the federal aerospace private client’s facility in Littleton, CO, in August 2017 to handle demo piping and has maintained their facilities ever since. The new ATLO (Assemble, Test, and Launch Operations) Facility was a crucial project for the client, enabling the building and testing of satellites under one roof.
While working on this small demo job, Murphy secured the contract for the CUP (Central Utility Plant) building, located in an isolated area of the existing warehouse. The Owner managed the plumbing, while our team handled the piping and sheet metal installation. After successfully fabricating and installing the CUP project, Murphy was awarded the HVAC and process piping work for the main building of the ATLO Facility. We applied the same philosophy as in the CUP project, prefabricating and pre-assembling everything possible in our shops before it reached the job site. This approach allowed us to complete over 25% of the project’s fabrication in our shop, which proved invaluable given the tight working spaces and aggressive schedule.
During the project, scheduling challenges arose, which, if left unaddressed, would have caused trade stacking. To tackle this issue, Hensel Phelps organized a planning session for all trades to collaborate and create a schedule that allowed each team to complete their scope within the tight time frame.
Through BIM coordination and the numerous inspections required by the owner and Hensel Phelps, many potential punch list items were eliminated, ensuring a smooth and efficient project completion.
