Lockheed Martin – ATLO Facility

Murphy Company first arrived on site at the Lockheed Martin Waterton Canyon Facility in Littleton, CO, back in August 2017 to perform the demo piping in the Sludge Press Building and has been maintaining their facilities ever since. The new ATLO (Assemble, Test, and Launch Operations) Facility was an essential project for Lockheed Martin in order to build and test satellites under one roof.

While performing this small demo job, we secured the contract for their CUP (Central Utility Plant) Building. This project was located in an isolated area of the existing warehouse building. Lockheed Martin performed the plumbing and Murphy installed the piping and sheet metal. After fabrication and installation on the CUP project, Murphy was awarded the HVAC and process piping portion on the Main Building of the ATLO Facility project. We carried the same philosophy on this project as we did on the earlier CUP project, in that everything that could be prefabricated and pre-assembled was done in advance in our shops before it hit the job site. Over 25% of the fabrication of this project was done in our shop, which helped tremendously as working spaces were tight and under a very aggressive schedule.

During this project, we were faced with an ever-changing schedule that if not addressed, would begin to cause the trades to stack onto each other. To address this challenge, Hensel Phelps put together a planning session for all the trades to come together and collaborate on a schedule that fit for each trade to complete their scope of work in the short time frame allotted.

Through BIM coordination and the number of inspections required by Lockheed Martin and Hensel Phelps eliminated a lot of possible punch list items.
