Saint Louis University – Dormitory & Cafeteria

Murphy Company was contracted by Alberici to complete the plumbing scope of work for the new seven-level, 280-room dormitory and cafeteria building on the Saint Louis University campus. The project kicked off in April 2016 and was completed in July 2017, just in time for the commencement of the Fall 2017 semester.

This extensive facility includes 198 bathrooms, each equipped with a shower, toilet, and two sinks. To efficiently meet the hot water demands of such a large dormitory, a Rinnai instantaneous water heating system comprising 16 interconnected units is installed in the lower level mechanical room, eliminating the need for a traditional boiler. This gas-fired system is capable of producing 67 gallons of hot water per minute, ensuring ample supply during peak usage times.

Murphy Company’s role extends beyond the installation of the heating system; our team also expertly crafted and installed all water, sanitary waste, vent, and storm piping throughout the building. All wet walls were prefabricated at Murphy’s facilities and delivered to the site for efficient installation. Furthermore, Murphy handled all plumbing connections for the building’s expansive kitchen and cafeteria, including water lines to dishwashers and sinks.

The project’s complexity, highlighted by the high volume of bathrooms and the need to work concurrently with multiple trades, required meticulous sequencing and daily coordination. Murphy’s precision in managing these dynamics showcases their expertise in executing large-scale, multifaceted construction projects.
