AstraZeneca – New Facility

Murphy Company was contracted to demo and prepare the existing AstraZeneca facility for their new manufacturing plant. Our team did a complete retrofit of the existing 300,000-square-foot facility to fit the needs of the rapidly growing biologics company. The high-tech biologics bulk manufacturing facility played an important role in AstraZeneca’s future commercial production and gave it and its MedImmune subsidiary.

Murphy was tasked converting the fermentation suite into a clean utility space. Murphy added two new WFI stills, a new WFI water throughout the plant, a new clean steam generator, and a new steam system throughout the plant. The majority of the existing utility and process piping systems were to remain, but with major modifications to meet the new project design. Murphy completed two major renovations which included the existing bio-reactor hall, which had 30k bioreactors, and the purification and recovery suites. We peaked manpower at 120 craftsmen (pipefitters, plumbers, and sheet metal). The project was on a tight timeline which required Murphy to step up to the challenge and schedule two shifts throughout the life of the project. Doing so we completed the project on time with everything validated and ready for AstraZeneca to perform their startup/transition to production. Murphy continued to have a small crew on site for almost another year to handle any extra modifications they needed on their maintenance facility program.
